Does the craft inspire the poetry, or the poetry the craft?

Where is the connection between craftmanship and poetry? Russell Jokela combines his woodcraft with writing of poetry and essays. In his poetry you find an appreciation of nature that is characteristic for his approach to his craft. From long experience, his skills as an artisan give form to his expression in wood, and in word; all inspired by the richness yet simplicity and humility of nature. Combining a deep understanding of wood with a love for hand tools and custom designs, he shows an appreciation for and understanding of his materials and of the methods he uses.
WORK
It is the artist in Russell that has moved him into the creative area of his craftmanship. His career has taken him over the years from home construction to interiors, and from interiors to design and making of furniture. He balances his poetry and essays with unique nature-inspired furniture designs.
He says “… woodworking is more of a reading or an appreciation of individual characteristics of a natural medium than a personal experience”.
His father’s Finnish heritage and his early years in a Scandinavian community in the USA, combined with his mother’s Japanese background have given him the best of two different worlds in his woodcraft. His craft is essentially a synthesis of Scandinavian sensibility with Japanese woodcraft.
His forte is using the natural character of wood to inspire the designs of his furniture. He has learned from Japanese craftsmen and their deep understanding of wood.
He uses hand tools, hand sketch designs and natural oils for finishing. In addition to his custom furniture work, he has worked with Japanese craftsmen on machiya, ko-minka, and temples in the Joetsu area.
His workshop is in Myoko-shi.
LIFE
Russell explains “My life-long fascination with hand tools and natural materials is rooted in my early years in the forests and fields of Michigan. My interest in writing and in poetry developed while attending college in Washington State, where I majored in fine arts and English literature.”
After college he spent several years working for different companies in the USA and in Japan, gaining experience in home and interior construction, and boat building. He gradually moved into custom designing and making of furniture which provided the outlet for his creativity that standard design work could not provide.
After working for 10 years for different companies, Russell has now been independent for the past 30 years. He came to Japan in 1995 and settled in Joetsu in 2000. He has lived here ever since except for an interval of three years during which he lived and worked in Sado Island. He has become a well-known and -liked foreign resident of the city.
Besides his woodwork and poetry, Russell likes camping, and spends much of his free time reading philosophy and history.
EXHIBITION
The title of his latest exhibition “Protege of trees” (in Japanese: ki no okage) is an interesting reflection of his relationship with the basic material of his craft. Not protective of, but protected by trees. While many craftsmen would describe themselves as protectors of trees, Russell feels trees are in a sense protecting him, helping him to make sense of his endeavours.
The JUCA museum, Kubiki-ku, Joetsu is currently showing a selection of his custom designed furniture pieces. The exhibition runs until December 15, 2024.

彼の特技は、木材の自然な特性を活かし、それを家具のデザインに反映させることです。日本の職人から木材への深い理解を学びました。手描きのデザインスケッチ、手工具を使い、自然由来のオイルを仕上げに使用しています。オーダーメイドの家具製作だけでなく、上越地域の町家や古民家、寺院の修復にも日本の職人と協力して取り組んでいます。
彼の工房は新潟県妙高市にあります。
人生
ラッセルはこう説明します。
「手工具や自然素材への生涯にわたる関心は、ミシガン州の森や草原で過ごした幼少期に根ざしています。詩や執筆への興味は、ワシントン州で美術と英文学を専攻した大学時代に発展しました。」
大学卒業後、アメリカや日本で様々な企業に勤め、住宅建築、インテリア制作、船舶建造の経験を積み、その後、標準的なデザインの仕事では満たせない創造性の発揮の場として、オリジナルデザインの家具製作に軸足を移しました。
ラッセルは10年間企業で働いた後、30年前に独立しました。1995年に日本に渡り、2000年に上越市に定住しました。それ以来、佐渡島での3年間を除き、上越市で生活しています。彼は市内でよく知られる外国人住民として、親しまれています。
木工や詩以外ではキャンプを好み、自由時間の多くを哲学や歴史の読書に費やしています。
展示会
彼の最新の展示会「Protégé of Trees〜木の御陰〜」は、彼の工芸の基本素材である木材との関係を興味深く反映しています。木を守るのではなく、木に守られているという考えです。多くの職人が自らを木の守護者と表現する一方で、ラッセルは木が彼を守り、彼の努力に意味を与えてくれていると感じています。
上越市頚城区の樹下美術館にて、彼のオリジナル家具の展示が行われています。展示は2024年12月15日まで開催されています。
